K1 Speed is an indoor kart racing facility that also hosts birthday parties and events. I had heard from some of my friends that it was fun, so I decided to see for myself how it actually was.
I went with a group and bought the birthday party package, so that will inform my opinion. First, the positives. The actual go karting itself was exhilarating. You can really feel the speed of the car going around the track, and if you are an adrenaline junkie it’s super fun. Even if you aren’t as enthused about the high speeds, however, you can still have a ton of fun since you control the speed of your own kart. Also, K1 Speed’s karts work for both kids and adults, so it’s very inclusive. The safety is definitely there – I accidentally crashed about 5 or 6 times, but it wasn’t painful. The most I felt was some vibrations immediately following 2 bad crashes. Though you are going around the same track 8 times, it doesn’t feel repetitive, and is still engaging. As for the party experience, K1 Speed’s party rooms are quite spacious and there is a small arcade, though it is not included in the party package and has to be paid for separately. Also, their party package includes a drink voucher for everyone, and they have a nice variety.
Now, for the less positive aspects. I didn’t think there were any glaring issues, but there were still aspects of the experience I felt could have been improved slightly. I was a bit disappointed by how short the racing time was, but I don’t count that against K1 Speed as I understand that it’s expensive to run and they have a lot of customers, so it makes sense that you don’t get that much race time compared to the price. A bigger issue for me was that there seemed to be a noticeable discrepancy between some of the karts. I had a different kart for the two races and the one I got for the first race did not respond to my steering nearly as well as the second one, so I was forced to turn the wheel as far as it would go to make a simple left or right turn, and I crashed into the wall at least 4 times. The second time around, the kart I got drove a lot smoother and responded to my wheel turns much better. I am aware that K1 Speed cannot assess every single cart and take them off for maintenance daily, but knowing I could potentially get a kart that didn’t work as well the next time around while paying the same amount (the karts are randomly assigned) definitely soured my impression of the experience. Also, I felt like a lot of the fun from the experience came from competing against friends and spending time with them afterward, so I don’t know if I’d enjoy it as much going by myself. Finally, the pizza at the party was made in-house and was pretty average, though I wasn’t expecting gourmet food so I wouldn’t call it a major gripe. I interviewed some other people at the party to get their opinions as well. Junior Nadia Fan said she liked “how fast the karts go and it was really fun to go as a group with friends,” but she also noted that her “second kart was super bumpy” and she thought the track was too short. Freshman Mikaela Yao said “I like the competitiveness of the races but I would’ve appreciated more laps to race,” echoing my aforementioned grievances.
All in all though, I consider this experience a 4.5/5, with the half point only being taken off for some carts being bumpy. Would recommend it!
