DV Night, a long-standing tradition where Dublin High competes against Dougherty Valley, is one of the most significant rivalries in the Bay Area. The history of the rivalry goes back to Dougherty Valley’s establishment in 2007. The rivalry began the following year, in 2008, and is now approaching 18 years. Only five miles away, Dougherty Valley’s close proximity to Dublin allowed intense competition to develop quickly, which has remained a vital part of Dublin’s sports culture since. However, with Emerald High joining our community, recent years have brought us closer to a shift in competition. As Emerald’s initial years come to a close, their program is expected to stabilize and meet Dublin’s high level. Over time, Emerald will replace Dougherty Valley, becoming the influential competitor that draws in the enthusiasm of Dublin’s community.
DV Night is especially exciting during basketball season as the elite levels of both teams provide the opportunity for unexpected outcomes and escalating tension. Their similar skill level also allows the game to turn at any point, circumstances that other sports don’t have the same access to. DV’s football team isn’t able to match Dublin’s talent while Dublin soccer isn’t fair competition for Dougherty Valley’s accomplished soccer team. As a result, DV Night always has a great turnout during basketball season—cheers can be heard echoing through the stadium, and the applause from teammates is loud.
Dublin’s girls basketball won by a 24-point blowout, with a final score of 54-30. They were able to maintain a lead throughout the game and kept DV firmly behind. In comparison to last year’s win in overtime, 65-56, girls basketball had an especially remarkable success. With another winning score of 51-39 in the 2023-2024 season, their constant wins definitely elevate the thrill of DV Night for Gaels watching girls basketball. The same excitement was reflected in the teddy bear toss, with many donations for Dublin High’s club PATCH being made at halftime. Coach Jose Alaverez’s guiding presence at Dublin is one of the key aspects to Dublin girls basketball’s unwavering triumph at DV Night. Hired as Varsity head coach in 2023, Coach Jose Alvarez has helped girls basketball solidify themselves against Dougherty Valley and many other schools.
Boys basketball had a thriller match against Dougherty Valley, winning in double overtime 68-66. Nick Lee truly proved himself as a clutch player in this game, unexpectedly forcing both of the overtimes with a 3 pointer – our student section was screaming in joy. Izayiah Romero solidified the win with a monster dunk, ensuring Dublin achieved their 2nd consecutive DV Night win. Dublin’s discipline throughout the season and intense play in the moment was worth it, contributing highly to their success at DV night and making the Gaels proud. This rivalry is truly an unforgettable event to see one day, so if you didn’t attend DV night this season, be sure to join in on the excitement next year!
