This season was definitely something special for our water polo players; not only did the varsity teams show large improvements with their programs, but both of the teams made North Coast Secti0n (NCS) playoffs!
After numerous tries to make playoffs, our men’s water polo team finally made it. For the past 2 years – some of the initial years of the program – boys water polo never went as far as NCS playoffs. With that in mind, this season was a highly impactful success, one that’ll serve as motivation for seasons to come. The team ended with an overall record of 10-11, marking this year as their most successful season in the past five years. Our Gaels began their season strong with four straight wins against Encinal, Moreau Catholic, Sonoma Valley, and Foothill; however, that streak ended after a devastating loss against Granada with a final score of 7-19. Following that defeat, the Gaels weren’t able to remain consistent and their season came to an end during the first round of NCS playoffs against Cardinal Newman. Despite their tough finish to the season, the team set a new precedent for future teams to surpass.
Moving onto our women’s team, they started their regular season off with a loss against Encimal. They bounced back and went on to have a winning streak of five against Moreau Catholic, Sonoma Valley, Clayton Valley Charter, Foothill, and Granada. The team reached the semifinals in NCS where they lost against Alhambra 4-8. The women’s team also achieved their highest overall record of 13-10, creating a baseline to build off of. However, as nine seniors are graduating, next year’s squad will be facing challenges to maintain momentum.
Though JV teams haven’t been formed for either the men’s or women’s team, this historic season brings hope in inspiring a new generation of water polo players, at any level, to try out. The accomplishments from this season have set a new standard for growth in Dublin’s upcoming years. Dublin’s water polo teams definitely trained hard this season with that persistence mirrored in their wins. Success is more achievable for water polo now than ever and our Gaels are reflecting that through their full support during each season. Despite being a newer addition to DHS Sports, the Water Polo program has greatly established itself while proving its potential for the following years.
Our Gaels have proved their talent with improvement each season and there’s so many opportunities to go up from here. With this memorable season, it only becomes more important for Dublin to recognize the program. The team has exhibited admirable values with commitment, perseverance, and unity through it all. Water Polo is such an unique sport that deserves to be represented by Dublin, so consider this your sign to try out next season!
