The latest installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise with Jack Sparrow (played by  Johnny Depp) released in May 2017. It was not received extremely well by the public. While general POTC fans loved the movie, with 89% of Google users approving it, Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 30% rotten score and IMDb scored it at a 6.9. The story is about an old enemy of Jack Sparrow named Salazar, a Spaniard known for his ruthless tactics to kill pirates, who was outmaneuvered by Jack when the pirate trapped Salazar into the Devil’s Triangle. Salazar returns as an undead monster who vows to kill Jack Sparrow after his escape. Soon, Jack, Henry Turner (the son of Will Turner from the original trilogy), and Carina Smyth will work together to find the Trident of Poseidon, a mythical weapon that can be used to conquer the seas, to defeat Salazar and end his curse.

This installment is definitely full of fun and some cool mind-graphics; however, it lacks a true sense of adventure and thrill. The adventure aspect of it is somewhat forced on the viewer, but the movie itself is very funny, especially in the beginning. Johnny Depp’s acting is flawless as always and Will Turner returns in the end because of what happens with the Trident of Poseidon. There are several discrepancies in the movie though, including one with the compass Jack had. He gave it away, but somehow, a witch in a sealed dungeon managed to acquire it. While this installment has its own plot problems, it’s still a fun movie to watch if you’re in the mood for a reckless, risk-taking hero that barely escapes death. I believe that this movie was interesting and incorporated historical details like aspects of ship handling and different lifestyles to make sense of the many events of the time. The British looked for the Trident of Poseidon in order to become the most powerful naval force on the planet, which they were in real life until the 19th century. This movie has a taste of its own, and while some may not like it, it still touches the hearts of many dreamers of fantasy and adventure.
