Traditionally, spring signifies new beginnings. As the days get warmer and flowers bloom on trees all over campus, a burst of energy seems to take over Dublin High, with most students choosing new classes, preparing for highly anticipated events, and awaiting the arrival of summer break. However, for seniors, the second semester carries the additional melancholy of closure. As they reach the homestretch of their high school careers, the class of 2024 reflects on the last four years and what’s ahead.
For many, high school has been a period of personal growth. Thomas Kuo tells the Shield, “As a second semester senior, graduation feels like it’s really snuck up on me. It’s kinda crazy that we got through about 2300 days of school and we’re down to our last 30… It feels like I’ve really grown in high school and discovered more of who I am.” However, this development which DHS offers may not be inexhaustible. As Kuo describes, “Lately, there’s also been a sense of complacency and a feeling like I’ve gotten out just about everything I can from high school, and neither of those will go away without a major shift in scenery. That’s why I’m also really looking forward to where I’m going from here on out.”
Indeed, many seniors are feeling both sad to leave Dublin and eager to explore their futures. Pramiti Manjapra states, “I feel both excited and sad about graduating. I’m going to miss my really fun senior year classes as well as the communities I’m a part of. I’m optimistic about the future and I can’t wait to see where my college degree takes me.” The prospect of meeting such important milestones can also feel strange. Finn Hua reveals, “Time is catching up to me, and it feels very surreal that I’m actually graduating and heading to college. I am honestly not too sure about my next four years or my future, but I have a structure at least.”
As for advice for underclassmen, seniors would prioritize self-trust and getting good rest. On the subject of college admissions, Anika Yu tells the Shield, “Have confidence in yourself throughout the application process—it makes a huge difference in how you ultimately present in your writing. You are always capable of achieving more than you think!” As for self-care, Surya Uniyal puts it bluntly: “Once you screw up your sleep schedule, there’s no going back.”
Congratulations to the class of 2024. We can’t wait to see where you go!
