Have you ever wondered how to get more involved with the community? Hively is a non-profit organization that offers free goods and a diverse range of services to families throughout Alameda County. Luckily for DHS students, Hively frequently hosts drives directly on campus!

Hively’s most recent drive at Dublin High took place on November 6th, and lasted until November 17th. Students and staff alike could come in any time during the school day and donate common family essentials such as diapers, gently used clothing, shoes, toys, and other necessities to set up in the Student Union and Library. Students were encouraged to donate to the drive or volunteer their time sorting items with Hively.

“It’s like Goodwill or Savers, except [Hively] is free to people who come in and take things they need. People can come in, no questions asked, and take necessities” explained an anonymous DHS senior who helped set up the drive. “For example, they have a lot of baby items for those who do not have the money to provide all the things that babies need.” Hively highly encourages donations of household items rather than throwing them away or letting them lay unused.

In case you missed the drive, Hively plans to host more drives at DHS in the near future. There is also a newly opened Hively Family Resource Center (HFRC) in Dublin, providing a safe space for local families to receive everyday necessities free of charge. Dublin High students are encouraged to volunteer directly at the local center, where they can earn volunteer hours for organizing and distributing items to families. Furthermore, HFRC provides a variety of services, such as mental health, family outreach, parent education classes, and family-strengthening sessions.

“Volunteering with Hively has honestly felt more meaningful than other types of volunteering,” commented an anonymous DHS junior. “I think this resonates with me because I am able to see how I can make a difference in others’ lives instantly.”

It’s clear that Hively is the perfect opportunity to give back to the community, whether that be with dedicating time or resources. Make sure to keep an eye out for the next drive, Gaels!
