The Importance of Inclusivity in Silicon Valley

“The best way to predict the future is to invent it together.”

A quote from Tim Cook, the most influential CEO in our current society, and the current CEO of Apple. The future of the business world proves to be robust, invariably developing to meet the conventionalities, regardless of the issues at hand. Consequently, the future of the business world, as told by Tim Cook, depends on the distinctive points of view provided by the teams that make it up.

However, it raises the point that despite the pressure to meet the quota for inclusion, the majority of businesses continue to exhibit the same group of people: white men. To speak truthfully, the white men who make up the majority of these businesses are not at fault for the current system. However, the catalyst of this issue, which has stemmed for decades, is generational wealth, providing the same group of people a heightened chance of success today.

This issue constitutes an environment of similarity, lacking distinctive perspectives. To provide different perspectives in the workplace, the current business world must build teams that illustrate diversity to grant more people opportunities and construct a business world with diverse points of view. By including diversity and promoting inclusivity in the business world, the overall structure of the company can improve as certain people who have grown in different environments with different values can provide an angle that would only be seen with inclusivity.

An example of this would be Sundar Pichai, the current CEO of Google, whose example depicts an outstanding talent portrayed by someone in a minority group. Pichai, being born in India, was unfortunately not given a heightened chance of achieving the level of success he is today, regardless, he worked in various technology jobs, eventually ending up at one of the biggest technology companies in the world. If not for inclusivity, both Pichai and Google would have been negatively impacted, demonstrating how embracing inclusivity in the work environment can benefit all parties involved.

The Bay Area includes a vast arena of diversity, a melting pot of different cultures and perspectives, all of which would be beneficial to companies if taken into consideration. Inclusivity is imperative in our current society, and as proven, if more companies were to acknowledge and incorporate more minority groups, complications in our current world could be solved quicker and more efficiently.
