The Brawl at the Australian Open

On January 28 & 29, two tennis matches dominated headlines as four of the world’s best players battled it out in Australia’s Melbourne Park. On Saturday, in the women’s singles match finale sisters Venus and Serena Williams of the United States fought for the championship trophy. The next day, two arch-rivals, in Rafael Nadal (Spain) and Roger Federer (Switzerland) also played against each other during the championship.

Another match held included the mens’ doubles where John Peers (Australia) joined forces with Henri Kontinen (Finland) to play against the Bryan Brothers of America, consisting of Robert “Bob” and Michael “Mike” Bryan.

Earlier on Thursday, January 26th, the womens’ doubles involved Andrea Hlaváčková (Czech Republic) and Peng Shuai (China) facing off against Bethanie Mattek-Sands (America) and Lucie Šafářová (Czech Republic). Finally, the tournament included the mixed doubles where Abigail Spears (America) and Juan Sebastián Cabal (Colombia) went up against Sania Mirza (India) and Ivan Dodig (Croatia).

The results of this tournament was certainly surprising, when Serena became the champion after beating her sister Venus. The most anticipated match ended with Federer claiming victory, adding his Australian Open title to his legacy. Peers and Kontinen defeated the Bryan brothers along with Mattek-Sands and Šafářová defeating Shuai and Hlaváčková. In the mixed doubles, Spears and Cabal claimed victory against Mirza and Dodig.
The tournament did reflect upon the type of legacies the winners would leave behind. However, the other athletes in the tournament shouldn’t be crestfallen, as there is always time to improve and there is always an opportunity to become the best!
