2017 Golden Globes: This Year’s Best Blunders and Beauties
JANUARY 10, 2017 — Held on Sunday, January 8th in Beverly Hills, the 74th annual Golden Globes did not fail to deliver on kicking off the 2017 award show season with plenty of memorable moments. The night created a social media storm, flooding Twitter and other networks with an abundance of photographs and hilarious tweets. But what actually happened at the star-studded event? Here are the 2017 Golden Globes events that got everybody talking.
Meryl Streep Delivers on Inspiring Yet Political Acceptance Speech
In her acceptance speech for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Cecil B. Demille Award, longtime accomplished actress Meryl Streep addressed many of the political issues rampant in the nation right now, including the racism and xenophobia inspired by Trump culture.
“Disrespect invites disrespect,” she reminded the audience. “Violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
Naturally, the speech sparked a fresh bout of Republican versus Democratic debate, including Trump’s personal weigh in to the New York Times that he was “not surprised that [he had come under fire] from liberal movie people”, and Streep is just “a Hillary lover”.
Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield Shared a Sweet Spideypool Kiss
Arguably the most talked about moment of the Golden Globes, actors Ryan Reynolds (DC Comics’ character Deadpool) and Andrew Garfield (Marvel Comics’ character Peter Parker, ie Spiderman) exchanged a peck as Ryan Gosling went to accept his award.
Though this was only caught momentarily on camera, the pair blew up the Internet as Spideypool shippers and film fanatics alike freaked out over the unexpected kiss. Likely all in good fun, Reynolds and Garfield managed to wreck the hearts of comic fans all over all the same.
Some of the Most Iconic Looks on the Red Carpet
The red carpet was truly filled with Hollywood stars as Emma Stone, wearing a delicate dress covered with silver stars, and Lily Collins, in a beautiful pink lace gown, stunned the paparazzi. When compared to other important celebrity events, such as the Met Gala, this year’s red carpet fashion generated tons of buzz as people shared photographs of their favorite glammed out movie actors and actresses.
The men didn’t fail to impress as well–artists like Donald Glover, more commonly known by his stage name Childish Gambino, proved you can still make a tux noteworthy as he graciously accepted two awards in a brown full-velvet suit.
From speeches to random side camera moments, the Golden Globes delivered in full force on newsworthy events, making it one of the most talked about nights of the year already. Though some actors may have not won the awards they had hoped, the night did not disappoint.
