Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Choir Bring a Night at the Movies to DHS with Their Combined Concert
If you did not attend the band, choir, and video production concert last Tuesday, then here is a recap (and more!) of the amazing performances. Led by Paul Everts and Alexandra Lopiano, the musical ensembles truly gave the audience a night to remember.
The first group to perform was the choir accompanied by the orchestra. They performed the theme from Alice in Wonderland, a mystical and ethereal piece. Members of the audience cheered loudly after the performance was finished, and then the show choir came through the aisles to sing “Seize the Day” from Newsies and “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire.
The concert choir then sang “The Hanging Tree” from Mockingjay: Part 1, a haunting tune. Accompanied by the award-winning jazz band, they sang “Skyfall” from the 2012 James Bond movie. After, the jazz band performed crowd-pleasers of their own, the theme from The Simpsons and “Hot Chocolate” from The Polar Express.
The advanced choir sang themes from Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. An all girl ensemble, their songs were soft, mellow, and beautiful.
The chamber choir then impressed the crowd with their vocal talent, singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, featuring junior Christine Haggin. They then sang the ultimate crowd-pleaser of the night, a catchy medley of tunes from acclaimed composer John Williams with lyrics about Star Wars. The piece included dancing, acting, funny wookie noises, and a refrain of “who’s your daddy”.
The wind ensemble and orchestra performed last, ending with a medley of songs from Harry Potter, featuring the winds. They ended with a combined choir and orchestra medley from The Phantom Menace. The choir sang and played kazoos, while the jazz band danced to “Augie’s Great Municipal Band” behind their peers in the wind ensemble.
Their terrific performances showed how hard these DHS students have been working this year. It was apparent to everyone who saw them that they were extremely dedicated to their performance. Make sure not to miss out on any more exciting concerts by groups and ensembles from DHS!
